Hard Water? 7 Ways to Get Better Results From Eco Cleaners

Hard water is the most common reason eco detergents seem to 'not work'. Calcium and magnesium tie up surfactants, leave limescale and turn whites grey. These fixes help.

  1. Add half an extra strip of laundry sheet for full loads — that's Natulim's own recommendation.
  2. Boost whites with oxygen powder. Two teaspoons of Oxi White per load brightens grey towels.
  3. Use citric acid as softener. About 100 ml of a 100 g/L solution in the softener drawer reduces scale on fabrics.
  4. Keep the dishwasher salt topped up even with all-in-one tablets if your water is very hard.
  5. Descale the machine monthly. An empty hot wash with citric acid keeps heating elements clean.
  6. Descale kettles and taps with a citric acid spray (150 g/L), left for 15 minutes, then rinsed.
  7. Don't overload. Crowded drums rinse poorly, which hard water makes worse.

Never use citric acid on marble, natural stone or aluminium.
